Navy Achievement Medal
NAVY ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL

Authorized by the Secretary of the Navy on January 24, 1962, and awarded to junior officers and enlisted personnel serving in any capacity with the Navy and Marine Corps who distinguish themselves by outstanding professional achievement or for leadership. Originally a non-combat award, the achievement medal is now awarded for both combat and non-combat service. The combat "V" device is worn on the ribbon if stipulated in the citation.

for services as set forth in the following citation:

     For professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties while serving as Leading Petty Officer for the Oil Lab, Main Propulsion Division, in USS KAUFFMAN (FFG 59) from 23 March to 31 August 1993, while deployed with the Sixth Fleet to the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Black Seas. Petty Officer Timberlake's extraordinary performance had a significant impact on the successful participation in operations PROVIDE PROMISE, DENY FLIGHT and SHARP GUARD, as well as the effective execution of Maritime Intercept Operations in the Red Sea under the control of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Central Command. Displaying striking initiative, leadership, and dedication to duty as Oil King, Petty Officer Timberlake authoritatively nurtured his workcenter through a challenging Mediterranean deployment. His strong leadership was instrumental in bringing his workcenter through a stormy trans-Atlantic crossing, an arduous patrol of the Adriatic Sea, an intense Engineering Training Group visit, and through countless ship and helicopter refuelings. Petty Office Timberlake's exemplary abilities were confirmed and praised by the Engineering Training Group, which found no significant discrepancies with any program or any material under his cognizance. Petty Officer Timberlake's professionalism, initiative and loyal devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

for service set forth in the following citation:

     For professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties as Workcenter Supervisor for the Oil Lab in USS ANTIETAM (CG 54) from April through June 1995. Petty Officer Timberlake consistently performed his demanding duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner. Petty Officer Timberlake played the key role in thoroughly inspecting more than seventy critical fluid tanks. He ensured that all tanks met the highest standards prior to closeout. He oversaw the overhaul of all critical fluid transfer and service systems, ensuring that all maintenance was successfully completed in time for the Light Off Exam. He expertly maintained logs and conducted effective training to ensure that all personnel understood lube oil and fuel oil program requirements prior to getting underway. He designed a computer based personnel qualification tracking program, implemented workcenter job tracking and designed and maintained a tank and void database, all of which serve as excellent management tools. His outstanding initiative and attention to detail are the reason the ANTIETAM has such a successful engineering liquid program. Petty Officer Timberlake's exceptional professionalism and selfless devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

for service set forth in the following citation:

     For professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties as Oil King, USS ANTIETAM (CG 54) from January 1996 to February 1996. Petty Officer Timberlake fine-tuned and flawlessly maintained all oil laboratory equipment; meticulously managed the lube oil, fuel oil and boilerwater/feedwater programs in compliance with established guidelines; and personally trained the Engineering Department in these vital liquid programs to satisfactory levels in all areas across the entire spectrum of ratings and paygrades. He was an essential member of the Engineering Casualty Control Team. His superb watchstanding ability, expert systems knowledge and untiring enthusiasm were evident in the outstanding conduct of engineering casualty control drills and engineering evolutions, critical to successful completion of the Operational Propulsion Plant Exam. As workcenter supervisor, he provided technical expertise, motivation and supervision that led to a superior team "Standard of Excellence." Petty Officer Timberlake's managerial ability, personal initiative, and unswerving devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
