About me: Until the Nov 2002 "Reduction in Force" I was a Linux Technology Engineer for Sun Microsystems. I worked for Cobalt Networks for about a year before it was acquired by Sun, and provided support and internal training for the Sun Cobalt line of server appliances to internal Sun engineers, etc.
Then for a year I sold Java-based mobile software from Defywire. It allows users with Java-enabled mobile devices (PDAs, phones, laptops/tablets) to connect securely via any TCP/IP-compliant network to business systems for real-time data access and updating.
After yet another economy-related layoff, I am now running my own Linux and open source consulting business. I specialize in helping small and medium businesses choose and implement open source technologies to help them be more efficient while spending less money. Services like web/email/file/print servers, firewalls, and even desktop computers do not need thousands of dollars of commercial software to perform adequately or be secure.
You can check my resume for background and contact information. If you have a specific project in mind, please email me with the details. I generally do project-based pricing, but other payment schedules can be arranged.
I run the CobaltFAQs.com website, which has Cobalt-specific
HOWTOs, software upgrades, etc. I am also co-administrator of the former Sun/Cobalt mailing
lists (cobalt-users, cobalt-developers, cobalt-security and
cobalt-announce). Sun shut down the list server in May 2004; a fellow Cobalt enthusiast
provided a server and I helped migrate the lists to their new home at
http://lists.qbalt.com/.
I've been using Linux on both servers and desktops since 1998 -- I started using Debian, migrated to Red Hat and Fedora, and now use SuSE Linux on my laptop and CentOS on my servers.
I want to give something back to the community, so I've created and posted some HOWTO files for various Linux-related tasks... if one of them helps you out, that's great! I ask that you "return the favor" and pass on some tidbit of knowledge someday to someone else who's just learning... oh yeah, and click my PayPal button too! :)
